A Preview of HTML 5
A host of new semantic tags (woohoo!), although I wouldn’t get too excited, current estimates have work finishing in around ten to fifteen years. I so want to make a joke about it coming out at the same time as WCAG 2, but that would probably be inappropriate..

Accessibility Interoperability Alliance
The official line: “The Accessibility Interoperability Alliance (AIA) brings companies together to collaborate on the design and delivery of solutions to long-standing Accessible Technology/Information Technology (AT/IT) interoperability challenges.”
Some pretty big names are already on the members list, including Ai Squared, Dolphin and Microsoft.

Pearl Crescent Page Saver
A Firefox extension that allows you to capture images of webpages – the whole thing – so you don’t have to stitch images together if you’ve got a webpage that scrolls. Rather handy!

Fake Name Generator
This site creates (with one click) a random, valid user profile including name, address, postcode, and loads of other details. It also sets up a throw-away email account for each profile as well, so you can receive incoming emails for the created profile - great for sites requiring account verification. Could well be useful for all sorts of testing.

A new Roundup feature - Joe’s top tip of the week:
I quite often use the Google site: search term to see approx how many pages are on a given website. E.g. google (no quotes) ‘site:www.abilitynet.org.uk’ and Google will tell you how many results are found, which is a useful indicator of the size of a site (For our site it gives 767). Whilst not a true indicator, as certain pages will not be indexed for a variety of reasons, it is perhaps useful when scoping a site for possible audit.
One of those nice, end of year sites:

If the Zen Garden is all a bit too 2006 for you, here’s a bunch of the best designs from this year. All with accompanying notes from the author saying why they were chosen. And there’s some gorgeous ones in there.
