What will be covered

This course will provide you with the foundations for creating accessible PowerPoint files and guidelines for delivering your presentations accessibly.

It includes guidance on how to use the Microsoft Office Accessibility Checker to check your presentations for accessibility issues and how to convert PowerPoint files to accessible PDFs. 

This course will look at

  • Making a PowerPoint presentation accessible, including correct implementation of
    • Text alternatives for graphics
    • Slide titles
    • Lists
    • Data tables
    • Reading order
    • Use of colour – including conveying information by colour alone and colour contrast
    • Formatting considerations – hyperlinks, font size and style, and good legibility
    • Embedded video
    • Metadata settings
    • Template accessibility
  • Checking accessibility with the Microsoft Office Accessibility Checker
  • Exporting to PDF and what needs to be considered to maintain accessibility.
  • Delivering your presentation accessibly, including considerations for:
    • Vision
    • Hearing
    • Mobility and touch
    • Cognition and learning
       

Learning objectives

At the end of this course you will:

  • Be able to create accessible PowerPoint presentations and templates
  • Know how to use the Microsoft Office Accessibility Checker and understand its limitations
  • Understand how to convert PowerPoint files to accessible PDFs
  • Appreciate the potential accessibility issues that need to be considered when presenting to an audience

Level of training

  • Introductory. However, it is beneficial if attendees will need to have some prior knowledge of accessibility standards and principles but will not need to be familiar with coding techniques.

Arnaud Ramgoolam

Arnaud Ramgoolam is an Accessibility and Usability Consultant at AbilityNet.

His role includes carrying out design reviews, accessibility audits, user testing and providing in-depth consultancy to organisations on web accessibility and usability.

His professional background includes working as a web designer and web developer, he was able to work with a range of digital agencies and small and mid-size enterprises.

He is accredited with the Certified Professional in Web Accessibility (CPWA) qualification from the IAAP, and holds a BSc in Computer Science from Middlesex University.
