Full Remote Assessment

What is a Full Remote Assessment with an AbilityNet Assessor?

An assessment carried out by AbilityNet is an evaluation of what assistance an individual might need to help them access a computer. It is not a test, it is finding out what adjustments we might need to make to a computers settings or its keyboard and mouse for example, to help the learner do the things that they want to do.

A remote assessment is intended to be no different to a face to face assessment, in that the assessor will try to help find a personalised solution to the difficulties that a learner faces. The only difference is that the assessor is not in the same room as the learner under assessment. A web camera will enable the assessor to see the learner and see what is happening when they use the computer and software enables the assessor to see the screen that the learner can see. By using technology in this way we hope that we can reach and help many more people than ever before.

In order to implement the suggested adaptations it would help if any alternative hardware available in the centre is available for the assessment process. However, if you have no hardware, this can be provided, but it may be that we have to have a two stage assessment. The first stage will identify what equipment should be made available for the second stage of the assessment.

Once the assessment process is finished, it will hopefully be a lot easier for the user to be able to access the computer.
