Many children with special needs are prevented from enjoying the toys and games their peers take for granted because their disability simply won’t allow them to operate the controls. Now parents of kids with physical problems which limit their motor skills and dexterity can make Christmas special with a new collection of specially adapted products launched by AbilityNet.
Using technology originally devised to help Daniel Reeves, a young boy paralysed in a car accident, to ‘drive’ his radio controlled racing car using simple head movements, manufacturer, Excitim Limited, has developed a comprehensive range of items suitable for toddlers through to young adults.
Says Jillian, Daniel’s mum: “It’s been brilliant for my son to have something he can control himself. He learnt how to operate the car really quickly and hasn’t stopped playing with it since. He loves James Bond and the car is an Aston Martin like in the films.”

Dream-Toys Storytime Christmas Bear
Storytime bear is a special switch adapted toy available for Christmas 2008. Pressing his switch makes his head and mouth move as he reads the story "Twas the night before Christmas".
He is 16" / 40 cm tall.
Three AA batteries are included. Any standard 3.5mm switch (not included) can be connected. Pressing the switch in his paw also turns Storytime bear on or off.

Dream-Gamer adapted Sony PlayStation controller - mini-joystick
Dream-Gamer is an adapted controller that enables children and young adults with physical disabilities to play games on the Sony PlayStation.
The Dream-Gamer mini-joystick enables individuals to use finger or thumb movements to control direction in the game - left, right, forward or backwards. The mini-joystick can be held in either hand or can be mounted in a support bracket that can be velcroed to a flat surface.
The mini-joystick can be connected to any of the five sockets on the Action Box and allows the gamer to use the joystick as a push button switch at the same time as controlling direction. A connecting cable is included in the kit.
Other game requirements are controlled by pressing external switches connected to the four action buttons or through the on-board buttons. A fifth switch, connected to the "start" button enables the gamer to start or re-start the game.
Any standard switch with a 3.5 mm jack plug can be connected to the Dream-Gamer controller.
