About our Tech Volunteer Support

Photo. A Tech Volunteer provides free tech support to an older person in his home.AbilityNet has a UK-wide network of Tech Volunteers who offer free technology support to older people and disabled people. You may need help to set up a new device, connect to the internet, have a problem with a computer virus or require support to connect to family and friends online.

Our friendly volunteers are DBS checked and can assist you by phone, over the internet or at home. They offer one to one support tailored to you, at your pace.

Volunteers are able to help with most computer systems, laptops, tablets, smartphones and other smart devices such as Smart TVs, Alexa speakers and Google Home devices.

To request our support:
• Use the Volunteer Support Request form on our website
• Call our helpline on 0300 180 0028
• Send an email to enquiries@abilitynet.org.uk
Please note: calls to our helpline number cost no more than a national rate call to an 01 or 02 number and count towards any inclusive minutes in the same way as 01 and 02 calls, and AbilityNet does not receive any money from these calls

How our volunteers can help

Our tech volunteers can help you get to grips with technology in all sorts of ways, including:

  • Choosing equipment to meet your particular needs; with suggestions on hardware, software and assistive technology
  • Helping install and set up new devices and software and adjusting settings to make things easier to use.
  • Diagnosing problems including malfunctions, viruses and error messages, or explaining software update requests
  • Improving confidence and ability with technology to ensure all the benefits of the digital world can be experienced
  • Providing guidance on how to shop online, make video calls to friends, play music or games and use other entertainment services

Our volunteers give up their spare time to support older and disabled people. We do our best to find a volunteer in your local area, and provide enough support to empower you to use your technology independently. Get in touch to request our help or find out more about the support in your area.
