Our one-to-one assessment services for individuals
This service is for people with disabilities who wish to use a computer at home for their own personal use. Usually a one-to-one Assessment will take place at an AbilityNet Centre, however in some cases we can also offer a Home Assessment.
Initial telephone consultation of up to ½ hour
As a first step you will be offered a telephone consultation of up to a ½ hour with a fully qualified assessor. During the consultation you will be asked a number of questions about any problems you have that affect your use of the computer (or other day to day activities if you don’t already use a computer) and what you are hoping to use the computer for.
At the end of this telephone call the assessor may have gathered enough information about your needs to be able to recommend actions you can take immediately to improve your computer access. These will be discussed and you may be sent AbilityNet factsheets, given details of where to get further information or details of people who may be able to support you.
If you try out the recommendations and find that you are still having problems then please get back in touch with us and we will be happy to try and help you again.
Alternatively, if the assessor thinks you require more help he/she may suggest a one-to-one Assessment.
A One-to-one Assessment at an AbilityNet centre
If we feel a One-to-one Assessment is required then you will be referred to the AbilityNet centre for your area. We usually offer one and two hour appointments depending on how many solutions need to be trialed. This will be discussed during your initial telephone consultation.
During your assessment you will probably be asked to sit at a computer and work with the assessor on different pieces of software and hardware. At the end of the consultation you may be given skillsheets or other printed information to help you make the adaptations discussed. Alternatively, the assessor may need to do some research and write to you after the appointment with further details.
Following an assessment the assessor will also provide you with a quote for a full system including any necessary training and support. There’s no obligation to buy any equipment from AbilityNet, but people enjoy the peace of mind that comes when the system is put together by AbilityNet, as we understand the specialist adaptations required and how to support them. We provide lifetime technical support for all the systems we supply, but cannot do this for other equipment.
Costs
We don’t make a charge for individual assessments at an AbilityNet centre as this is part of our charitable work.
However, if clients wish to make a donation this is very welcome. We depend on donations to help us to carry on providing our free services. Those most in need are often those without access to funding.
